Vision
Tuesday, February 7, 1995 - 1:05pm

I went through the last two weeks, applying creativity in many forms to try to realize my original vision for a commercial art piece, a brochure. My usual graphic design creativity came into play initially, first in conceptualizing a theme and a rough layout, later in using the actual tools to put it together.

Where did the original vision come from? Part of me does an almost unconscious inventory of the elements that were available to build the piece. An available button graphic, a hand image, screen shots from the software that is the subject of the piece - these things presented themselves, and I ordered them into the original idea. It often strikes me as odd that my design is often driven this way - it seems sort of backwards. Shouldn't the vision come first, followed by a search for appropriate content? I suppose I could really substitute ANY objects in place of the 'available' objects. These would serve equally well as idea generators. Given the broader choice of possible objects, it potentially could result in a more 'creative' piece.

Continuing with the process, I had a vague idea of carrying the visual theme of the software screens into the brochure. This took the form of using a graphical texture that dominates the software screens. The visual play of the 2d software button being transformed into a 3d physical object pushed by a hand was the central image in my mind's eye. That image formed early on, in my very first rough sketches.

I had a thought about making the piece somewhat conservative, very quiet and professional in demeanor to reflect a particular image for the young company. However, I'm not sure whether this thought was part of the initial process, or if it came up later as a rationalization for the already-existing design. I carried this through particularly in the interior layout, with conservative text blocks, font selections and image placements.
