Color
Sunday, May 4, 1997 - 8:55 pm

I painted for about seven hours yesterday... I think I made a breakthrough in my use of color... this canvas (a self-portrait that I painted from a mirror) has a certain richness and freedom with color that I've never found before, either on canvas or even in the digital realm (though I may have come close to it with pastels at one time).

I think some of it came from talking with a couple of others who were painting or drawing the other night... one was new to pastels and she was learning to throw unexpected color on the paper, just as I did with my drawings... the other was an accomplished painter, and her work already had the depth and texture and richness that I wanted to achieve.

That may have set a frame of mind, and somehow when I started painting yesterday, I just started throwing color on the canvas with little conscious thought... and the rest took care of itself. I sort of surprised myself.

I wonder if I'll be able to do it again?
