The Graffiti Wall

What is this?

When I was much younger, I used to walk the breakwaters at Northwestern University, off the shores of Lake Michigan. I was captivated by what I saw... scrawled, painted, scribbled and scratched on the faces of every boulder. There were words, there were pictures... professing every shade of human emotion... the expressions were pure, sincere... whether profound or guttural... they told a story.

That's what I would like to do here. You can express your self, in whatever way you please. Take the image above, add your own stuff, and get it back to me. The details are in the small print at right. In the early going, it must have been a little intimidating to put paint on a blank (or nearly blank) wall... I'm glad that didn't stop you! Since the wall is evolving with every new mark, I'll keep previous versions of the wall here, too. Here's what the wall looked like in October 1996. This is how it appeared in April 1997. This is how it looked by July 1997. The Wall changed dramatically in November. Here's what it looked like before the change. Now take the wall as it exists now (above) and make your own mark!

the Rules
just one... in the spirit of graffiti, I ask that anything you add be created by your own hand... pasting in photos or clipart is cheating... after all, you can't cut and paste onto boulders in the real world... well you can, but it doesn't stick very well... anyway, have fun... break out the spraypaint tool (or whatever) in your favorite paint program and get to it...

The Logistics
So how will this work? Pretty simple... download the image, using whatever procedure your browser demands. Then use your favorite paint program to open the image (it's a JPEG file, so you'll need a program that can edit and save this format). Add your artwork (remember the one and only Rule!). Save it as a JPEG file, then email it back to me. I'll post the new image in this space. If I receive more than one addition at a given time, I'll do my best to integrate them somehow. That's it. Now get in there and paint!
